Located on the border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls is one of the world’s most famous waterfalls. Niagara Falls casino Geological History

The Niagara Escarpment, which forms the rim of the gorge around the falls, is a result of glacial erosion. During the last ice age, massive sheets of ice carved out the underlying rock face, creating a deep channel for water to flow through. Over time, this process continued as the glaciers retreated, and by about 10,000 years ago, the Niagara River had formed into its present shape.

The falls’ unique geology is largely attributed to the presence of dolostone (a type of sedimentary rock) in the underlying bedrock. This softer material erodes more easily than harder rocks, which has allowed the water to carve out an extensive gorge system over thousands of years.

Types and Variations

While Horseshoe Falls is by far the largest component of Niagara Falls, it’s not the only noteworthy feature. The American Falls, located on the US side of the border, plunges 170 feet (52 meters) into a rugged landscape. Bridal Veil Falls, situated between the other two sections, is smaller but still offers an impressive sight.
